JOHN “Jack” M. SMART, III was born in Providence, Rhode Island on December 11, 1943. After his father finished his Navy duty in Rhode Island, he moved with his family back to Johnson County, Indiana where he has lived most of his life. He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1962. He attended Indiana University, where he received a Bachelor of Science, majoring in business marketing and management, in 1966. Thereafter, he served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in 1969.
Jack pursued his legal education through Indiana University School of Law, graduating in 1974 with is Doctor of Jurisprudence Diploma. He was admitted to Johnson County, Indianapolis, and Indiana Bar in 1974 and admitted to practice in the United States District for the Southern District of Indiana also in 1974. He served as Chief Deputy Prosecutor for Johnson County from 1974 through 1982 and served as Greenwood City Attorney from 1976 through 1984. His primary areas of practice are in criminal law, domestic law, and probate/estate work. He is also a registered mediator for both domestic and civil mediations.
